Boston artist Betsy Silverman creates brilliantly colored photorealistic cityscapes and representations of New England life that transcend the boundaries of collage art. Her technique combines a broad training in visual art with an ecological consciousness that inspired her determination to use recycled materials.
Betsy’s artistic process involves a painstaking search through stacks upon stacks of recycled magazines – her “palette” – in order to find pieces of paper that exhibit the gradations of color, hue, and intensity required for her representational demands.
In addition, Betsy’s clever and ironic use of the underlying magazine text and image content forms what Venü Magazine has called “a multilayered visual story,” remarking: “It is an exercise in delight for one’s eye to explore her work and discover what lays in wait there.”
A bold reinterpretation of collage art
